Description Captain Elijah Dewey, the son of the first minister in Bennington, the Reverend Jedidiah Dewey, was born in Westfield, Massachusetts, in 1744 and died in Bennington in 1818. Dewey is shown in this portrait with the present-day Walloomsac Inn located on Monument Avenue, Old Bennington, in the background. For over 40 years, Dewey was proprietor of the Inn, originally known as Dewey's Tavern. He led a very active life, serving as a Captain of the Bennington Militia at Ticonderoga in 1776 and at the Battles of Bennington and Saratoga in 1777. He hosted many revolutionary and political meetings at his inn. One of the most famous visits took place in 1791 when U.S. Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson and Virginia Congressman, James Madison paid an official visit to the town.
